OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING YOUR CAR AT Croatia
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is powerful enough (the roads are steep) but compact (some passages are narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.

Where to sleep in Dubrovnik: best districts
Why sleep in Dubrovnik?
Dubrovnik is one of the most visited cities on the Dalmatian coast. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, its medieval walls, white limestone streets and views of the Adriatic make it a must-see destination in Croatia. The city is also a cultural and historical landmark that will amaze you with its museums and activities.
Here’s our map to help you get your bearings, with the main areas to stay in Dubrovnik:

Sleep in Dubrovnik’s Old Town

The Old Town(Stari Grad) is the historic heart of Dubrovnik. Surrounded by medieval walls, it is home to the main monuments, the Stradun promenade, museums and much of the city’s nightlife. To sleep here is to wake up in the midst of heritage, just a stone’s throw from it all.
Benefits:
- Central location: everything within walking distance
- Unique atmosphere, immersion in UNESCO heritage
- Close to the city walls, the Stradun, museums and restaurants
Disadvantages:
- Accommodations often more expensive and less spacious
- Large crowds in high season
- No car access inside the ramparts
Our favorite hotel: Hotel Villa 5DB
Sleeping in the Lapad and Babin Kuk districts

The Lapad peninsula is a bay-facing district. Here, we enjoyed the seafront promenade, water access and superb hotels. At the far end, Babin Kuk is home to several large hotels with breathtaking views of the Adriatic.
Benefits:
- Quiet, residential atmosphere, away from the crowds
- Easy access to the beaches and promenade of Lapad Bay
- Large, fully-equipped resorts
- Good bus links to the old town (10min by car)
Disadvantages:
- Further from the main historical attractions
- A less picturesque atmosphere than downtown
Our favorite hotel: Hôtel Royal Neptune
Sleeping in the Gruž district

Gruž is the area around the main port and bus station. More modern and less touristy, we believe it’s ideal for travelers who want to reach the islands easily by ferry or take a boat trip. Accommodation here is generally less expensive than elsewhere in the city.
Benefits:
- Direct access to ferries to the Dalmatian islands
- Often less expensive accommodation
- More local atmosphere
Disadvantages:
- Less charm than the old town
- Away from the ramparts and main attractions (approx. 3-4km)
Our favorite hotel: City Hotel
Sleeping in the Pile district
Pile is located just west of the old town, opposite the Porte Pile, the main entrance to the ramparts. It’s an area we found very convenient for visiting the historic center on foot, while benefiting from a slightly less dense environment than the inner city.

Benefits:
- Just a few minutes’ walk from the main entrance to the old town
- Quick access to Fort Lovrijenac and the Onofrio Fountain
Disadvantages:
- Busy tourist area
- Few directly accessible beaches
Our favorite hotel: Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik
Sleeping in the Ploče district
To the east of the Old Town, the Ploče district is one of Dubrovnik’s most elegant areas. Beautiful sea views, luxury hotels, easy access through the Ploče Gate and proximity to Banje Beach. It’s a neighborhood we believe will appeal to travelers looking for a stay that’s both refined and central.

Benefits:
- Beautiful sea views from many establishments
- Direct access to Banje Beach
- Luxury hotels in a chic, residential atmosphere
Disadvantages:
- Some of the most expensive accommodation in town
- Few local shops
Our favorite hotel: Excelsior Hotel
Sleep on the north coast or in a coastal village

To get away from the crowds, several small villages to the north or south of Dubrovnik offer accommodation perched on the heights or by the sea. Brsečine, 16km from the city, is a good example: calm, spectacular views, authentic atmosphere. Further south, the small medieval town of Cavtat, which we loved, also offers a pleasant alternative.
Benefits:
- Quiet, natural setting, far from the hustle and bustle of tourism
- More affordable or more intimate accommodations
- Close to the Trsteno arboretum (north side) or the center of Cavtat (south side)
Disadvantages:
- Car or cab required
- Away from the ramparts and the old town (20-25min drive)
Our favorite hotel: Hotel Ninon Bed & Breakfast
Other useful tips to keep in mind
Dubrovnik is a very popular destination in July and August: book your accommodation several months in advance for the high season. Car traffic is impossible in the old town and highly regulated in the surrounding area. Parking is scarce and expensive. If you’re staying outside the historic center and have a car, it’s best to choose hotels with private parking. Last but not least, local buses provide efficient links between the various districts.

Other addresses we love in the Old Town
These two establishments are part of our Old Town selection. We haven’t tested them personally, but they correspond to the criteria we use to recommend an address: location, quality of traveler reviews and value for money.
Hotel Boutique Stari Grad

The Hotel Boutique Stari Grad is located within the city walls of Dubrovnik. This ancient building was completely renovated in 2013, and now blends modern conformity with historic charm. The decor also reflects this, with patterned drapes, elaborate mirrors, works of art brightening up the walls and a design touch that we find elegant. There’s also a rooftop restaurant, ideal for enjoying traditional dishes and views of the old town. For travelers wishing to stay in the heart of Dubrovnik in a refined setting, this is an excellent address to remember.

Hotel The Pucić Palace

Housed in an 18th-century baroque palace just a few steps from the Stradun, Hotel The Pucić Palace is a 5-star establishment well worth a visit! Centuries-old stone walls, antique furnishings, marble and precious woods, and modern amenities create the chic, comfortable décor you’d expect from a palace. A restaurant and wine bar complete the offer. In our opinion, this is one of the most emblematic addresses in the old town.
