We’ve explored its different neighborhoods to help you choose where to stay in Poreč. Here’s what you’ll find in this article:

Best Hotels in Poreč: Our Top Picks

A charming hotel on Marafor Square: Martis Heritage Hotel

Martis Heritage Hotel—facade facing Marafor Square

Located right on Marafor Square, in the heart of the old town, the Martis Heritage Hotel combines contemporary design with a setting steeped in history. We appreciated the balance between modern lines and an authentic location, just a stone’s throw from the city’s Roman ruins.

Elegant hotel on the boardwalk: Hotel Valamar Riviera

Valamar Riviera Hotel - Ocean View

Located on the historic promenade, across from Sveti Nikola Island, the Valamar Riviera Hotel offers rooms, many of which feature direct ocean views. We recommend this hotel to travelers who want to stay in the old town while enjoying access to the island’s beach, just a few minutes away by boat.

Where to Stay in Porec: Best Neighborhoods + Map

Why stay in Porec?

Poreč is one of Istria’s most popular seaside destinations, particularly for its Roman old town and its6th-century Euphrasian Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its Byzantine mosaics.

Surrounding the historic center are several beachfront resort areas, as well as a small, wooded island accessible by boat. We found that the town is just as suitable for a stopover on a road trip as it is for a beach vacation. Learn more about the attractions in Poreč.

Euphrasian Basilica in the Old Town of Poreč

Poreč remains a very popular destination in July and August, with significantly fewer visitors during the off-season, in the spring or in September.

Map of Poreč and Its Neighborhoods

Here is a map to help you locate the four neighborhoods we highlight below:

Map of the Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Porec
Map: Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Porec

1. Staying in the Historic District

Built on a narrow peninsula, Poreč’s Old Town is home to most of the city’s heritage sites and nightlife. Its cobblestone streets, a legacy of the Roman urban layout, lead to the Euphrasian Basilica and the seaside promenade. We appreciated the immediate proximity to restaurants, shops, and the boat docks for getting to Sveti Nikola Island. This is the neighborhood to choose if you want to do everything on foot.

Old Town

Benefits:

  • Walking distance to landmarks, restaurants, and boat docks
  • A lively atmosphere in the evening along the promenade

Disadvantages:

  • Very busy area in high season
  • Limited paid parking
  • Hotel rates are higher than at outlying resorts

Our favorite hotels:
Martis Heritage Hotel
Valamar Riviera Hotel

2. Staying in Zelena Laguna (north coast)

About 4 km north of the historic center, Zelena Laguna is a resort area nestled in the middle of a pine forest that slopes down to the sea. It features large hotel complexes, several swimming pools, a marina, and a golf course. We recommend this area to families looking for a relaxing getaway with plenty of on-site amenities. You’ll need a bike, a bus, or a car to get to the Old Town.

Parentino Beach

Benefits:

  • Large resorts equipped for families
  • A wooded setting, set back from the hustle and bustle of downtown

Disadvantages:

  • A ways from the old town (bike, bus, or car recommended)
  • Resort-like atmosphere, less authentic than downtown

Our top pick in this category: Marea Suites Hotel, Valamar Collection

3. Staying in Plava Laguna (south coast)

South of the city center, about 2 km away, the Plava Laguna area also features several large hotels and beachfront resorts, set in a lush, green setting with lawns and pine forests. We found the atmosphere here to be quite similar to that of Zelena Laguna, with quicker access to the historic center on foot or by bike, depending on the property. This neighborhood is particularly well-suited for multi-day stays with family or friends.

Luno Beach

Benefits:

  • Faster access to the old town than from Zelena Laguna
  • Wide selection of hotels and family-friendly accommodations

Disadvantages:

  • Stay away from the center for a completely pedestrian-only area
  • Resort-like atmosphere during peak season

Our recommendation in this sector: Parentium Plava Laguna Hotel

4. Staying on Sveti Nikola Island (Isabella Island)

Across from the old town, the small, wooded island of Sveti Nikola—marketed as Isabella Island—is just a few minutes by boat from the harbor. The island is pedestrian-only and home to a single resort, surrounded by beaches and lush vegetation. We found this setting particularly relaxing—cut off from traffic, yet still within sight of the historic center. The ferry service, however, operates on a seasonal schedule.

Sveti Nikola Island, Isabella Island, Poreč
View of the island in the background, from the Basilica tower

Benefits:

  • Pedestrian-only island, a peaceful setting surrounded by nature
  • Beaches and a heated pool on site

Disadvantages:

  • Depends on the ferry schedule
  • There are few restaurants outside the resort

Our top pick in this category: Isabella Island & Villas Hotel, Valamar Collection

Other useful tips to keep in mind

Poreč attracts large numbers of visitors in July and August. We recommend that you book your accommodations several months in advance if you plan to visit during the high season. Parking in the Old Town is limited: check with your hotel about nearby parking options.

In addition, the boat shuttle to Sveti Nikola Island operates on a seasonal schedule: be sure to check the departure times if you’re staying on the island or simply want to spend a day there.

Valamar Riviera Hotel - Room with a Sea View

The Valamar Riviera Hotel is located right on the historic promenade, directly across from Sveti Nikola Island. Several rooms offer direct views of the sea and the island—a feature we found to be rare given the hotel’s proximity to the city center. Martis Heritage Hotel - Designer Room

The Martis Heritage Hotel is located directly on Marafor Square, one of the oldest squares in the old city, on the site of the ancient Roman forum. The decor features a contemporary design, contrasting with the ancient ruins that surround the hotel. Some rooms and apartments feature a balcony or terrace.

What sets this hotel apart is its location in the heart of the old town, just a short walk from both the Euphrasian Basilica and the seaside promenade. We recommend this place to travelers who want to see everything on foot, without having to rely on a car.
