It\u2019s a small medieval island town, situated between the mainland and the island of \u010ciovo and connected to both by bridges. The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its remarkably well-preserved urban layout.  <br\/>We appreciated the intimate size of the town, which you can explore entirely on foot in just a few hours. St. Lawrence Cathedral, with its carved Romanesque portal, is the main attraction in the historic center. that\u2019s much less crowded than Split or Dubrovnik.<br\/>We found the atmosphere particularly laid-back, thanks to two unique installations along the waterfront: the Sea Organ, which produces a Here are a few of our favorites\u2014though this list is by no means exhaustive, given how rich the country&#8217;s urban heritage is. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">18. Nin<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Nin\/i-XHZrNcg\/0\/M7b96fw6FfJL6RNq8WGR3RKcp2Z9JtBzDKvThMGxM\/L\/croatia-nin-L.jpg\" alt=\"Nin, Croatia\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nin is a small historic town surrounded by salt marshes and sandy beaches, 20 minutes from Zadar.<br\/>We loved its tiny Church of the Holy Cross, often described as the world\u2019s smallest cathedral still in use.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">19. Mali Ston<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Pejelsac-Peninsula\/Ston-wall\/i-VRxCSTg\/0\/KPVW7zbQJP2FKttksGCL89D33fk5q6VS3zr5dFmHR\/L\/Ston_wall_IMG_7256-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ston Wall, Pelje&#x161;ac Peninsula\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mali Ston, the twin town of Ston on the Pelje\u0161ac Peninsula, is connected to Ston by long fortified walls that are among the longest in Europe.<br\/>We were particularly impressed by its culinary reputation, with oysters and mussels harvested right beneath the windows of the village restaurants.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">20. Rab<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Extra\/i-rdLhjKB\/0\/Lm3tBk9hHnBNm8jdVHRW34PLqVLfPh6h6q7LNBNt6\/L\/Rab_DP_675086144_XL-L.jpg\" alt=\"City of Rab\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old town of Rab is recognizable from afar by its four Romanesque bell towers rising above the rooftops, including that of St. Mary\u2019s Cathedral.<br\/>We also enjoyed the nearby Lopar Peninsula, known for its sandy beaches, which are quite rare in Croatia.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">21. Stari Grad<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Islands\/Hvar\/Stari-Grad\/i-CgHpHSj\/0\/MMDQqZXDjRBJ7rGMKBxKdZBbpWDKd9CZJnTJttSRv\/L\/Stari_grad_IMG_2215-L.jpg\" alt=\"Stari Grad, Hvar, Croatia\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded by Greek settlers in the 4th century BCE, Stari Grad is one of the oldest cities in Europe.<br\/>We particularly enjoyed its agricultural plain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is still cultivated according to the geometric layout left by the Greeks.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">22.
