We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.

Practical tips for a 3-day visit to Dubrovnik

What can you see in Dubrovnik in 3 days? Is it long enough?

Three days covers the essentials: the city walls, the old town, the main museums, a trip to the island of Lokrum or kayaking, the beaches and an evening on the Stradun. It’s a good length of stay to soak up the city’s atmosphere without rushing.

To prepare your stay in the best possible conditions, you can also find all our suggestions in our article on what to do in Dubrovnik and our article on the best excursions from Dubrovnik.

Map of must-see attractions

To help you find your way around our itinerary below, here’s our map of Dubrovnik’s main tourist attractions:

Map of Dubrovnik’s top attractions

Dubrobnik Pass

To avoid queuing at attractions, consider the Dubrovnik Pass: it includes access to the city walls, Fort Lovrijenac, the Rector’s Palace, the Maritime Museum, MOMAD and several other municipal museums, as well as unlimited use of city buses. The 1-day pass costs €40, the 3-day pass €50. For further information, visit the official Dubrovnik Pass website.

Getting around Dubrovnik

The Old Town can be visited entirely on foot: it’s a pedestrian area closed to vehicles. To reach outlying districts such as Lapad or Gruž, the city bus network is efficient and inexpensive. Lines 1A and 1B connect the Pile stop (entrance to the Old Town) with the port of Gruž and the Lapad district. Tickets can be purchased from the driver for around €2, or are included in the Dubrovnik Pass. If you’ve rented a car, the nearest covered parking lot to the Pile Gate is Parking Ilijina Glavica (approx. €5/hr). Otherwise, there are parking lots along the outer ramparts. In high season, spaces are scarce.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING YOUR CAR AT
Croatia

Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.

Choose a car that is powerful enough (the roads are steep) but compact (some passages are narrow).

There is a lot of demand, book it early.

See the cars

See our tips (coming soon)

Where to sleep in Dubrovnik

When it comes to accommodation, there are several areas to choose from. Our must-sees

Here’s our program for three days in Dubrovnik: the must-see medieval and Baroque sites on the first day, a day of nature, beaches and monuments on the second, and a third day devoted to museums, water sports and a special evening above the city.

Day 1 – 9am: Walking the ramparts

The first day begins on the ramparts at 9 a.m. (they open at 8 a.m. in high season, for those wishing to start earlier). These medieval fortifications, whose construction dates back to the 14th century, completely encircle the old town for almost 2km. From the top of the walls, we found the views of the orange-tiled roofs, the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands breathtaking. The looping route allows you to observe the city from all angles, both on the seaside and inland. We recommend this time of the morning: the light is favorable and the crowds still absent. Allow around 2 hours to cover the entire circuit. Admission is €40 for adults, included in the Dubrovnik Pass. Read all our tips in our article dedicated to the Dubrovnik city walls here.

Day 1 – 11 a.m.: Stroll through the old town

From the heights of the ramparts, wander down into the narrow streets of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. This labyrinth of white limestone, lively squares and Baroque facades reveals itself at every turn. We particularly enjoyed leaving the Stradun for the quieter, but just as interesting, alleys that run up the hillside. Don’t miss the 15th-century Grande Fontaine d’Onofrio, or the Renaissance palaces along the way. Allow 1h-1h30 for a leisurely stroll. Access is free from Porte Pile or Porte Ploče. Founded in the 14th century, it houses one of Croatia’s oldest Romanesque-Gothic cloisters, whose finely sculpted double columns create a tranquil setting. Also on site is one of Europe’s oldest surviving pharmacies, open since 1317. We found it particularly relaxing in the middle of a busy morning. Admission is included in the Dubrovnik Pass.

Day 1 – 1pm: Lunch

For this first lunch, we recommend a konoba in the side streets of the old town, far from the touristy addresses of the Stradun. Restaurant Kopun is a benchmark for authentic Dalmatian specialties, including roast rooster Ragusan style. Restaurant Konoba Dubrava, meanwhile, offers fine local cuisine in a warm and welcoming setting.

A LITTLE MORE patience

All the photos, maps, information and addresses you need to make your stay in Croatia a success will soon be available in a single ebook!

Day 1 – 2:30 pm: Visit the Rector’s Palace

The Rector’s Palace is one of Dubrovnik’s most representative monuments of Gothic-Renaissance architecture. Formerly the seat of government of the Republic of Ragusa, it housed the elected rector, whose term of office lasted just one month. Its collections trace the history of this city-state through period furniture, official portraits and ancient coins. We were particularly struck by the loggia with its elaborate columns adorning the façade and the sculpted details of the capitals. Allow 1 hour for a classic visit. A cable car takes you from the old town to the summit in just a few minutes, offering superb views of the orange roofs, the Adriatic Sea and the island of Lokrum. We recommend the climb at the end of the day: the light on the ramparts is particularly beautiful at this time of day. At the top, the Imperial Fort houses a museum dedicated to the Croatian War of Independence. There’s also a bar and a panoramic restaurant where you can extend your visit. Price: €25 return, including fort. The bottom station is at Petra Krešimira IV, a 10-minute walk from Porte Ploče. It’s the perfect time to have a drink and observe the life of this great pedestrian thoroughfare that crosses the old town from east to west.

Day 1 – 8pm: Dinner

For this first dinner, Restaurant 360 is an unmissable 1-Michelin-star gourmet address, set on the ramparts with a terrace overlooking the old port (count €150 to €200 per person, reservation on 360dubrovnik.com). Housed in the former TUP graphite factory founded in 1953, this privately-owned museum offers an immersion into the Yugoslav period from 1945 to 1991 through a well-designed interactive scenography. We found the room devoted to Goli Otok, the Communist-era prison island, particularly striking. Not included in the Dubrovnik Pass. Price: €9 for adults. Open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. The museum is located in the Gruž district, a 30min walk from the center or 10min by bus (lines 1A, 1B, 3). See our tips in our article dedicated to the Red History Museum.

Day 2 – 11:30 a.m.: Stroll in the Lapad forest park

Now that you’re in the Gruž district, take the opportunity to walk or take the bus to the Lapad peninsula, 4km west of the center. Its forest park offers shady paths ideal for a leisurely stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the old town. We found the atmosphere a little more local here: the seafront is pleasantly wooded. It’s also an opportunity to discover Dubrovnik off the beaten tourist track before lunch.

Day 2 – 12:30 p.m.: Lunch at Restaurant Pantarul

For lunch in the Lapad district, Restaurant Pantarul is our reference address. This bistronomic bistro serves creative cuisine based on local produce in a relaxed atmosphere. We appreciated the quality of the dishes and the more authentic atmosphere of this residential district, far removed from the tourist crowds of the Stradun.

Day 2 – 2pm: Uvala Beach or Bellevue Beach

In the early afternoon, it’s time for a swim. If you prefer to stay in the Lapad district, Plage Uvala is within easy walking distance of Restaurant Pantarul. Also nearby, Plage Bellevue, nestled at the foot of the cliffs to the west of the town, offers a quieter setting and a beautiful view of the fortifications from the sea. We found the latter particularly pleasant outside the high season. Note that most of Dubrovnik’s beaches are pebbled.

Day 2 – 4:30 pm: Assumption Cathedral and its treasures

Back in the old town, stop off at the Cathedral of the Assumption, built between the 17th and 18th centuries in Baroque style. Its treasure trove is worthy of note: gold and silver reliquaries, a polyptych attributed to Titian and a reliquary of the skull of St. Blaise, patron saint of the city. We were impressed by the richness of these collections, little known to visitors who crowd the streets without stopping to admire them. Admission to the cathedral is free; the treasure is €4 (cash only, shoulders covered).

Day 2 – 5:30 pm: Fort Lovrijenac

Perched on a 37m rock to the west of the old town, Fort Lovrijenac is one of the strongest silhouettes in the Dubrovnik landscape. Built in the 11th century to defend the town against Venetian attempts to seize the bay, it bears the Latin inscription “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro” (“Freedom cannot be sold for all the gold in the world”). Fans of the Game of Thrones series will recognize it: it was used as the setting for King’s Landing’s Red Fortress. We recognized it at first glance! The 180° view of the sea and ramparts from its terraces is well worth the detour. A 5-minute walk from the Porte Pile, it’s included in the Dubrovnik Pass. It’s also one of the stops on the city’s Game of Thrones itineraries. Book your Game of Thrones visit here.

Day 2 – 8pm: Dinner

For this second dinner, there are two good addresses to choose from. Restaurant Zuzori offers an elegant blend of fish and seafood from the Adriatic Sea in a refined setting. For something more gastronomic and creative, Restaurant Pjerin is a refined Mediterranean table, well suited to an evening after a day rich in discoveries. We recommend that you book either of these restaurants in advance, especially in high season.

Day 3 – End your stay in style

Day 3 – 9am: Escapade on the island of Lokrum or kayak along the ramparts

For this third morning, there are two options to suit you. The first: the island of Lokrum, a nature reserve accessible in ten minutes by shuttle bus from the old port. Covered with pines, century-old olive trees and Mediterranean plants, it is home to a botanical garden founded in the 19th century by Archduke Maximilian of Austria. The peacocks that roam freely between the ruins of the Benedictine monastery are a spectacle in themselves. An inland sea lake offers calm waters for swimming. We’ve fallen under the spell of this place! Find all excursions to Lokrum here.

The second option: kayaking from the old town, along the Adriatic side of the city walls to sea caves carved out of the limestone rock. Accessible to beginners and supervised by guides, this is an original way to discover Dubrovnik from the sea, accessing inaccessible coves on foot. Allow 3 to 4 hours. Book your kayak trip here.

Day 3 – 12pm: Lunch at Proto Fish Restaurant

On your return from your seafaring escapade, head for the port or the old town for lunch. In our opinion, the Proto Fish Restaurant is an excellent address for lovers of fresh fish and seafood from the Adriatic, in a well-kept setting. A well-deserved lunch break before a cultural afternoon.

Day 3 – 1:30 pm: Sponza Palace

The afternoon begins with the Palazzo Sponza, one of the few buildings to escape the 1667 earthquake. This 16th-century Gothic-Renaissance masterpiece is one of the most successful buildings in the old town. Its façade, punctuated by trefoil-arched windows, and its loggia make it a must-see. We were struck by the elegance of the whole, which contrasts with the baroque sobriety of the surrounding buildings. Access to the inner courtyard is free.

Day 3 – 2:30 pm: War Photo Limited

Not far from the Palais Sponza, the War Photo Limited gallery presents photojournalism exhibitions on contemporary conflicts. The approach is artistic and committed, far from the usual tourist circuit. We found this address particularly useful for understanding the region’s recent history, including the siege of Dubrovnik during the Croatian War of Independence. A short but dense visit, lasting around 30min to 1h.

Day 3 – 3:30 pm: MOMAD, Dubrovnik Museum of Modern Art

Leave the old city center and head east. Housed in the Villa Banac, the Museum of Modern Art of Dubrovnik (MOMAD) exhibits works by Croatian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. We found it an interesting visit for those wishing to discover local art beyond its medieval and baroque heritage. The museum is included in the Dubrovnik Pass.

Day 3 – 4:30 pm: Swimming at Banje Beach

MOMAD is located not far from Banje Beach: take advantage of it for a last swim in the late afternoon. The view of the ramparts from the water is one of the best you’ll find in Dubrovnik. We recommend this moment to bring your day to a quiet close before returning to the starting point of the zip-line. Access is free, although some areas offer deckchairs for a fee.

Day 3 – 6pm: Tyrolean traverse at sunset

To round off this third day, we recommend a zip-line over Dubrovnik at sunset. From the heights, you’ll fly over the orange-tiled roofs and the Adriatic Sea in the late afternoon light, overlooking the bay and old town from an angle that few visitors experience. Book your zip-line over Dubrovnik here.

Day 3 – 8:30 p.m.: Dinner in the sky or at Restaurant Bura Bistro & Bar

To round off your three-day stay, there are two options, depending on your mood. For an extraordinary experience, Dîner dans le Ciel (Dinner in the Sky) in Dubrovnik offers dinner suspended from a crane dozens of meters above sea level, with a panoramic view of the old town and the Adriatic. An unforgettable evening to end on a high note! For a more relaxed atmosphere, we recommend Restaurant Bura Bistro & Bar, offering creative cuisine based on local produce in a lively setting.

ACTIVITIES IN Dubrovnik

Blue grotto

Panoramic zip-line

Culinary tour

Boat to the Elaphite Islands

Kayak

Alternative 1: Dubrovnik with children

Visiting Dubrovnik with the family? Dubrovnik

The weather in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm, sunny summers and mild winters. In July and August, temperatures reach 28 to 32°C. Spring (May, June) and autumn (September, October) offer more pleasant temperatures, between 18 and 24°C, and remain the best times to visit the city on foot. In winter, temperatures fluctuate between 8 and 15°C, and the city takes on a more local and tranquil atmosphere. We particularly appreciate this season for the quality of the light and the quietness of the alleyways.

The crowds in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is one of the busiest destinations on the Mediterranean. In July and August, the city walls, the Stradun and the emblematic sites are very busy, especially with cruise liners pouring in thousands of visitors every day. We recommend May, June or September for a more comfortable experience. Arriving early in the morning for the ramparts and museums will also help you avoid the queues. Remember to book your tickets in advance in high season. Outside this period, accommodation prices drop significantly.

Adapt your itinerary when it rains

On rainy or windy days, there are several options. The Red History Museum, MOMAD, the Maritime Museum and the Rector’s Palace are good alternatives for a sheltered morning. The Franciscan Monastery and the War Photo Limited gallery are also interesting stops on overcast days. The cafés and restaurants of the Stradun and the side streets invite you to take a leisurely stroll. We found the old town particularly charming on a grey day: the alleyways are less busy and the atmosphere is more intimate.

To prepare your stay in the best conditions, find all our suggestions in our guide to what to do in Dubrovnik, our guide to the best excursions from Dubrovnik and our selection of the best hotels and areas to stay in Dubrovnik.

It’s time to book!
Compare everything: companies, prices, schedules and availability.

SHE WROTE THE ARTICLE
Julie

Three days in Dubrovnik is the ideal length of time to explore this fortified city on the Dalmatian coast: the medieval ramparts, the UNESCO-listed baroque old town, the museums, the Adriatic beaches and a few outings in the surrounding area.
