Founded in 1889, this university garden covers more than 5,000m\u00b2 and is home to over 6,000 plant species, including endemic and rare plants. Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p>The answer is yes, for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its <strong>vast collection of over 6,000 plant species<\/strong>, including endemic and rare plants, is impressive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The garden offers a peaceful ambience, with <strong>themed areas<\/strong> such as the water lily pond and the Japanese garden.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s perfect for a <strong>1-2 hour walk<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>This tour was one of our favorite activities in Zagreb.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-wQ2SHXX\/0\/NMZT474QXWnmMJn2F6k7vFCDrvLfdM9NzspGmPhHM\/L\/path-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"shaded walkways - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the Zagreb Botanic Garden famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Zagreb Botanical Garden is renowned for its rich botanical collection and city-center location. Founded in 1889, it is one of the oldest university botanical gardens in Croatia, protected as an architectural monument since 1971. <\/p>\n\n<p>We enjoyed its varied thematic zones, including an English landscape arboretum, a Zen garden, a water lily pond and collections of carnivorous plants&#8230; Not forgetting the famous <strong>giant water lily<\/strong> from Amazonia, the <em>Victoria amazonica<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-HVMWgMc\/0\/NgJstT2PrVvKgW7VMjRb9qD4fxqFt3FrqNgwGt66k\/L\/perspective-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"French garden - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our favorite moments<\/h3>\n\n<p>During our visit, several moments particularly struck us:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Walking under the trees:<\/strong> it was very hot during our stay in Zagreb and we really appreciated the coolness of the tree-lined paths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Japanese garden:<\/strong> a Zen corner offering a striking contrast to the rest of the garden. Meticulous planting and typical landscaping invite meditation. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The water lily basins:<\/strong> linked by a wooden bridge, we enjoyed the peace and serenity of this area. They enable visitors to discover the botanical collections and the history of the site.<br\/>No audioguide available. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Catering<\/h3>\n\n<p>There is no on-site catering at the garden. To eat, you&#8217;ll find several restaurants and caf\u00e9s in downtown Zagreb, close by. To continue the vegetarian experience, we chose to have lunch at <strong>Restaurant Zrno Bio Bistro<\/strong>, less than a 15-minute walk from the garden, which offers some fine vegetarian dishes.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Restaurants\/Znor-Bio-Bistro\/i-9thcCGm\/0\/NMcp3Hf8rHLkj2NBchFNrGPLnrHQ264H58pKkMRcf\/L\/restaurant-znor-bio-bistro-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"Restaurant Zrno Bio Bistro, Zagreb\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Restaurant Zrno Bio Bistro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A walk between water, shadow and light<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ponds, bridges and soothing reflections<\/h3>\n\n<p>At the heart of the arboretum, the small ponds known as <em>Jezerca<\/em>, are pretty pools dotted with water lilies, offering a peaceful atmosphere. The wooden bridge linking them invites contemplation. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-zdHq4vP\/0\/LCqTbfFhvW6NXmFqSR5K674NNR4xJH9rLkbLcSZZP\/L\/bridge-large-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"water garden - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>It naturally reminded us of the Japanese bridge in Claude Monet&#8217;s garden at Giverny. The reflections of the water, combined with the meticulous planting, create a subtle play of light that soothes and invites relaxation. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-J2Pd35C\/0\/KWM8zGBX7zSwtmFF2DnrqVjv6Brw3sKk7C2vTBtdV\/L\/nympheas-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"water lilies - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tree-lined avenues and shaded areas<\/h3>\n\n<p>The garden paths are largely lined with trees, providing shady areas ideal for a quiet, and above all, cool, break. It was very hot during our stay in Zagreb, and we particularly appreciated the shade of the foliage. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-bgjtPjk\/0\/Ltn9mQ2ZWgcmzVGZ9TQhQJsrPkVHrKxhFCsZmBSBX\/L\/undergrowth-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"English garden - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The organization of the trees creates vast perspectives where the light gently filters through. Benches scattered here and there allowed us to fully appreciate this peaceful atmosphere, where the cool shade invites us to stroll in complete serenity. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-ZrM4mF7\/0\/LNtcGXKTD7H452qMvV8RvCJSZFVGscSs5d37Fd5xZ\/L\/shadow-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"alleys - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discover the greenhouses and emblematic sites<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regional collections and specimens from elsewhere<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Zagreb Botanical Garden houses an exceptional collection of over 6,000 plant species. Here you&#8217;ll find carefully cultivated Croatian endemics and rarities, as well as species from other parts of the world. We spotted a <em>Wollemia Nobilis<\/em>, a conifer native to Australia.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-8GQVP24\/0\/NCcjH2xqsBLLFCCm4nf533PdL58Ctj5Frc45QSkQm\/L\/Wollemia-Nobilis-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"Wollemia Nobilis - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>You won&#8217;t want to miss the aquarium-like exhibition greenhouses, where you can see sensitive and exotic plants, including carnivorous plants. These spaces allow you to observe rare specimens in a controlled environment, promoting scientific research and conservation. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-qFGzWtr\/0\/KrgtPmNBMprkX8T4CvvLCxsCVxXQvnBhFKwBdr9Cx\/L\/carnivorous-plants-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"carnivorous plants - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flowerbeds and seasonal varieties<\/h3>\n\n<p>The garden features numerous themed zones, including a Japanese Zen garden, an alpinum and a simple garden. Each season offers a different spectacle, with spring and autumn blossoming in particular. Summer was already well underway during our stay, and we missed out on the lovely spring colors.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-LjhMdwf\/0\/M6GjRPFRsJB7pc8cnfMXx5kpQpWvvfjSZCDJzF3WM\/L\/zen-garden-botanical-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"zen garden - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An open-air botanical voyage<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tropical universe and rare species<\/h3>\n\n<p>We also found a number of greenhouses which, unfortunately, we were unable to enter. They house rare exotic plants, recreating the ideal conditions for their preservation. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-KB8sVWT\/0\/NQ3SxVNwfrZLSBvwZ87qc8GJtVCVms65Xx2JhNtWn\/L\/university-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"greenhouses - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>At the center of the garden, one of them, <em>Victoria&#8217;s House<\/em>, caught our eye. It is a venue for various exhibitions and events. It was in fact privatized at the time of our visit. We were unable to enter.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Croatia\/Zagreb\/Jardin-Botanique\/i-5rXpGg6\/0\/KGVgRB9jC6S3CPFbNqRpnj8Sq5qx9dwKL5jrfZF7D\/L\/red-pavillon-botanical-garden-zagreb-L.jpg\" alt=\"red pavilion - Zagreb Botanic Garden\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>But there are many other fascinating sights, such as the <em>Park u Vrtu<\/em>&#8216;s finely carved woodwork, punctuated with motifs. And at the far end of the garden, we spotted a huge painted wall.
