Eating at Restaurant La Struk in Zagreb’ s Old Town immersed us in authentic Croatian tradition. This small, rustic restaurant, run by two brothers and a friend for over ten years, serves just one dish: Zagorje Strukli. We savored these delicate rolls of hand-stretched dough stuffed with fresh cheese, available boiled or au gratin with truffle, honey or paprika. The warm ambience and hidden, guinguette-style courtyard make this a Zagreb nugget not to be missed.

Why eat at Restaurant La Struk in Zagreb?
Is Restaurant La Struk worth it?
The restaurant is well worth a visit for 3 reasons:
- The authenticity of a preserved tradition: the restaurant won us over with its unique concept of a single dish, interpreted to perfection. Strukli from Zagorje are prepared according to the ancestral method, with hand-stretched dough so thin you can read through it. This Croatian specialty, handed down from generation to generation, comes to life before your very eyes in this small establishment that has refused to compromise on quality for over ten years.
- A complete and generous culinary experience: the variations on offer transform this traditional dish into a veritable gustatory voyage. We found melt-in-the-mouth boiled versions and crispy, golden gratin versions, both savory and sweet. Portions are so copious that they satisfy even the hungriest of appetites.
- An intimate setting full of charm: the restaurant’s cramped, rustic atmosphere contributes to its authenticity, with a Croatian nursery rhyme on the wall telling the story of strukli. But the real treasure is hidden in the interior courtyard, lit in the guinguette style, perfect for a romantic dinner or a convivial moment with friends.

What you will eat
At Restaurant La Struk, get ready to discover Zagreb’s signature dish in all its forms. This type of lasagne stuffed with fresh cheese can be enjoyed plain for purists, or topped with surprising garnishes: red peppers for a Balkan touch, truffles for gourmets, or a sweet apple-cinnamon strudel version. The texture varies according to your desires: soft and comforting in a poached version, or au gratin with its crunchy crust hiding a creamy heart. A unique yet versatile dish that more than satisfied our appetite.

What you will drink
The drinks menu celebrates authentic Croatian flavours. Accompany your strukli with a glass of traditional milk, plain or flavored with rum and honey, a classic Zagorje pairing. As beer lovers, we opted for the local

The atmosphere of the restaurant
The restaurant’s atmosphere reminded us of a neighborhood cantine where time has stood still. In this intimate space in the old town, locals and tourists rub shoulders at the wooden tables, united by their love of strukli. The tempting smell of cheese au gratin fills the air as the family team busies itself in the kitchen. The 25-minute wait is part of the ritual. It’s time to prepare each minute order. Conversations mingle with the clatter of cutlery, creating the symphony typical of Zagreb’s good restaurants, where people eat elbow to elbow, without fuss but with passion.

How to get there
- To reach the restaurant, the streetcar is ideal with lines passing through Ban Jelačić Square, Zagreb’s nerve center located just a few minutes’ walk away.
- Buses to the historic center also stop nearby.
- Access by car to Gornji Grad (upper town) is limited, with little parking, so we recommend walking.
- We walked to the restaurant from our hotel, the Boutique Hotel HOH, a pleasant 15min walk through the cobbled streets of the historic center.

Parking
Parking in Zagreb’s Old Town is complicated. Spaces are scarce in Gornji Grad and often reserved for residents. Choose the public parking lots in the lower town. Walking remains the best option for accessing this historic district with its narrow streets.

For people with reduced mobility
We didn’t note any specific facilities for people with reduced mobility, but access to the restaurant can present challenges. It is located in the steep, cobbled streets of Zagreb’s historic district. The restaurant itself is cramped and rustic, with an inner courtyard that requires you to negotiate a few steps. We advise you to contact the establishment directly to check specific access conditions and the possibility of special arrangements. Find out more here.

Is Restaurant La Struk family-friendly?
The restaurant can accommodate families, even if this is not its primary vocation. The relaxed, no-fuss atmosphere puts everyone at ease, and children will appreciate the sweet versions of strukli (apple-cinnamon, honey). Generous portions make it easy to share. However, the cramped space and lack of a specific children’s menu can be a challenge with young children. The place is better suited to families with older children, curious to discover a local specialty in an authentic setting.
