Is the village of Motovun worth a visit?

Yes, the village of Motovun is definitely worth a visit! Perched on a hilltop, it offers a remarkable panorama of green valleys, vineyards and forests renowned for their truffles. Strolling through its cobbled streets and stone houses, we rediscovered the authentic atmosphere of an unspoilt medieval village, far removed from the hustle and bustle of coastal towns. You’ll discover a place where history can still be read in the architecture and where terraces dominate the landscape. If you appreciate ancient villages, panoramic views and authenticity, we recommend you add Motovun to your itinerary. It’s one of the most beautiful villages in Istria!

Motovun village: well worth the effort

If you don’t have a car, you can discover it on an organized tour:

  • From Pula
  • From Poreč
  • Or from Rovinj

1. Stroll through medieval alleyways

Motovun village: alley

We strolled along Motovun’s cobbled streets, lined with stone houses, narrow arcades and vaulted passageways. Every turn seemed to offer a new detail: an old gate, a stone plaque, ornate windows. The village is compact, making for a gentle, intimate stroll.

Motovun village: history

As you stroll around, you’ll feel the weight of history, as if time has stood still here, far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities. The irregular cobblestones, the sloping terrain and the absence of cars in the center reinforce the impression of being in an unspoilt, authentic place. For anyone who loves the charm of old villages, this walk seemed essential.

2. Visit St. Stephen’s Church

village of Motovun: church

In the heart of Motovun, St. Stephen’s Church (Church of St. Stephen / Crkva Sv. Stjepana ) stands in the main square. We pushed open the door and discovered a building marked by the centuries. You’ll be able to observe its architecture, a blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Venetian influences, reflecting the many dominations that Istria has known.

Motovun village: frescoed church

The church is sober but full of character. We loved its frescoes, which give it a very romantic feel. It’s a stop that gives meaning to the visit, beyond the alleys and views. The church is a landmark for locals and visitors alike.

3. Climb to the top of the bell tower to admire the scenery

village of Motovun: bell tower

We climbed up to the bell tower adjacent to the church. A narrow staircase and a few steps later, we found ourselves facing a breathtaking view. On one side, the village’s tightly-packed roofs and ancient walls, on the other, the valley, wooded hills, vineyards and olive groves stretching as far as the eye could see.

village of Motovun: view from the bell tower

From this high point, the panorama gives a new dimension to the village. You’ll understand at a glance why it was built here, on this hill, as a lookout, to protect the village and dominate the landscape. On the way up (or down), don’t forget to observe the bells that punctuate village life with their tinkling.

4. Participate in a truffle or olive oil tasting event

istrian truffle

Istria is world-renowned for the quality of its truffles, especially white ones, and for its top-quality olives and olive oil. Most of the production of these products takes place in the heart of green Istria, exactly where Motovun is located.
Why not take advantage of your visit to discover and taste these exceptional delicacies? It’s an opportunity to understand the link between the land and Croatian gastronomy.

5. Spend the night in the village

Motovun village: hotel

Spending the night in Motovun is a great way to make the most of it! The village is transformed as night falls, the alleyways empty, the stones take on softer hues, and silence envelops the place.

Motovun village: sleep on site

Sleeping in the village offers a relaxed atmosphere, away from the crowds, with a rare sense of serenity. The accommodation (stone houses, small charming hotels, sometimes rooms with a view over the valley…) offers the necessary comfort while respecting the rustic identity of the place.

6. Understanding the history of Motovun Village

Motovun village: old gate
Old door

Looking at the ramparts, the old buildings, the church, the ancient gates, and the steles on display under the old medieval gate, we realized just how ancient and complex Motovun really is. The village, perched at an altitude of 277m, has survived the centuries. You can see this in its architecture, which blends Roman, medieval and Venetian influences.

Motovun village: remains

The ancient walls, the compact structure, the central square, all bear witness to a rich past. To understand this past is to give meaning back to the village. You’ll realize that beyond its tourist appeal, Motovun is a place of memory, of mixed cultures, of Croatian history.

7. Enjoy lunch in one of our many panoramic restaurants

Motovun village: panoramic terrace

After your visit to the narrow streets and bell tower, you may be feeling peckish! We recommend lunch in a restaurant overlooking the valley. We noticed many terraces with magnificent views. This is your chance to sample some of Istria’s most famous local products: truffles, olive oil, wine, charcuterie, sun-drenched vegetables…

Between sky, hills and local aromas, this lunch promises to be a highlight of your visit. Here are a few tables we didn’t have the chance to try, but which we did select:

  • Restaurant Mondo, voted best small restaurant in the world by the New York Times,
  • Bistro Montona Gallery
  • Restaurant Fakin

8. Admire views of the surrounding Green Istria

Motovun village: landscape

From the heights of Motovun – ramparts, bell tower, alleyways – the views over green Istria, valleys, forests, hills, are magnificent. We took the time to rest, to observe the valley of the Mirna river, the vineyards, the olive groves, the woods – a landscape that changes gently with the light and the season.

Motovun village: panorama

This unobstructed view gives Motovun an almost timeless setting, quite different from the Mediterranean coasts: quieter, denser, more rooted. For lovers of nature, landscapes and gentle panoramas, it’s well worth the detour.

9. Explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike

There’s much more to Motovun than its medieval heart. If you have the time, we recommend exploring the surrounding hills, forests, vineyards and olive groves. Several trails and cycle paths (such as the former Parenzara railroad line, now a greenway), allow you to discover Green Istria.

Motovun village: village square

During our research, we discovered that the Motovun Film Festival, held every summer, transforms the village into a venue for independent screenings, cultural events and social gatherings.
If you’re lucky enough to coincide your visit with the festival, you’ll discover another facet of the village. The atmosphere changes completely: lively alleys, cinema, exchanges, a mix of local and international life. It’s a great way to discover Motovun in a different light, especially if you’re a film buff! Find out more here.

While in Motovun, we took the opportunity to make a detour to Hum, a village often referred to as the “smallest town in the world”. Useful tips for visiting Motovun

How long and when?

Half a day is enough to visit the historic heart of Motovun: narrow streets, church, tower, ramparts, while taking time to stroll, enjoy the view and a meal. If you also want to visit the forest, the vineyards or another nearby village, plan a full day or even 2 days. If you have the time, sleeping here offers the advantage of discovering the village in the soft light of morning or the calm of evening. For the best comfort, we recommend coming in spring or autumn. The weather is generally mild, the crowds moderate, and the atmosphere more peaceful than in summer.

Tour directions, map and difficulties

The center of Motovun is best explored on foot. You’ll find cobbled lanes, sometimes on slopes, and staircases. The village is compact, so it’s easy to find your way around, but the terrain requires good shoes.

Visiting with children

Motovun is well-suited to family visits: its quiet lanes, the climb up to the bell tower or the ramparts, and the panoramic views will appeal to children curious about history or nature. Walks in the forest or in the surrounding hills offer a natural setting that makes a pleasant change from the seaside. However, some of the slopes and stairs can be tiring for younger children. You may need to adjust your pace, limit the number of climbs, or consider using a portage if necessary.
